BRUSSELS, Sept. 30. Belgian Air Force completed a combat mission in the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (ISAF) under NATO command. On Tuesday the ministry said the country’s defense. “All the forces and means of the Belgian contingent left Afghanistan,” – noted in the department.
This mission was the longest expeditionary campaign in the history of the kingdom, which lasted from September 2, 2008 – that is more than 6 years. In Afghanistan, were involved in fighter-bombers 6 F-16 Belgian Air Force and about 300 pilots and maintenance personnel. For six years they have made about 6 000 sorties.
Over the entire period of the war the Belgian contingent did not suffer losses in manpower and equipment. The cost of doing this operation amounted to about €45 million per year. NATO will complete the withdrawal of its combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. At the moment, in this country are about 40 000 foreign military.
The current military campaign in Afghanistan has 13 years, it had been began in 2001 as a response to a terrorist attack on the United States using a passenger aircraft in New York September 11, 2001. During this time the forces of the USA, NATO and its allies have not been able to stabilize the situation in this country, where guerrilla detachments movement “Taliban” in recent years is intensifying.
