The mission’s mandate is limited to the analysis of human rights issues, so in parallel should be an independent investigation by international standards, said spokesman for the OHCHR
GENEVA, September 26. The monitoring mission of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Ukraine will investigate reports of mass graves near Donetsk. This was reported in Friday’s press secretary OHCHR Ravina Shamdasani.
“Yes, we have seen these messages (mass graves) and, of course, our team will conduct on-site investigation of these allegations,” – she said, answering the question.
“Neither are a lot of questions – who is responsible for this, exactly how many bodies. Our team plans to conduct an investigation,” – said Shamdasani.
As explained by the representative of the department, the mission’s mandate, however, limited to the analysis of human rights issues, so should be held parallel to the “independent and impartial investigation in accordance with international standards”, and with the assistance of forensic experts. “We simply do not have the possibility to carry out such an investigation,” – admitted Shamdasani. She did not specify who should be engaged in clarifying the circumstances of the incident.
