World news today, SYDNEY, September 18.  15 people have been  arrested during a large-scale counter-terrorist operation in Australia. As reported on Thursday, the newspaper Ostrelian, the raid was the largest in the history of the country.


According to Australian law enforcement agencies in the operation involved more than 800 law enforcement officers who have tested at least 12 sites in Sydney, Brisbane and Logan. “Police believe a group of people against which the operation was carried out, was planning to commit acts of violence in the country,” – said the Deputy Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police Andrew Colvin. Last week, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced an increase in the level of terrorist threat in Australia with a medium to high due to the growing threat posed by the extremist group Islamic State, acting on the territory of Iraq and Syria. “I want to emphasize that this does not mean that a terrorist attack is imminent – said the then Prime Minister. – However, there are people who intend to commit terrorist acts in Australia, and they are able to do it.” Earlier Thursday, insurgents of the Islamic State have distributed a video on their willingness to do battle with the United States. It has been called extremists “flames of war” and is regarded by experts as an open warning to Washington.
