Following the meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Lamberto Zannier said that the ceasefire was generally respected, but occasional abuses

United Nations, September 22. Parties of the conflict in the east of Ukraine should not use the ceasefire to obtain military advantage to one another. This opinion was expressed on Sunday Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Lamberto Zannier. Following the meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, he said that the ceasefire was generally respected, but violations.

Ceasefire

“In general ceasefire, apparently satisfied, but there are violations, which, naturally, we strongly condemn” – said Zannier. “The truce should not serve as a pretext for trying to gain an advantage, because if you act this way, then all goes wrong” – he stressed.

According to Zannier, the OSCE aims to “make the greatest possible contribution to enforce the ceasefire and to achieve a de-escalation of the crisis” on the basis of the agreements reached in Minsk last week. “This is the beginning of solving the problem, so we need to take as much effort,” – he said.

OSCE observers in Ukraine

Zannier said that Ukraine has posted “80 observers” of the OSCE. “We’re going to bring that number up to 500, we are now in the process. We need to buy cars and other equipment, so it’s a matter of logistics. We have already received proposals for the provision of personnel”, – he added.
