All they overcame the required minimum of 97 of the 193 votes of UN member states. However, Costa Rica and Thailand withdrew from the competition, gaining the least votes – 120 and 136 respectively. Received the most support as Ghana (187), Nigeria (187) and RK (185).
Botswana, India, Indonesia and Kazakhstan were actually re-elected – the five countries included in the composition of the Board since 2011. The remaining ten January 11 will replace Austria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Italy, Kuwait, Peru, Romania, Philippines, Czech Republic, Chile and Costa Rica.
The composition of the HRC, who succeeded in 2006, the Commission on Human Rights, has 47 states, each of whom is elected by majority vote of the UN General Assembly by direct secret ballot. The greatest representation of the HRC devoted to Africa and Asia-Pacific – 13 seats, Latin American and Caribbean States delegate to the board of eight countries, Western Europe – seven, Eastern – six.
Council members shall serve for three years and are not eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms of office. Russia will remain a member of the Council before the end of 2016.
