French military will temporarily replace UN forces in northern Mali

PARIS, October 27. French military contingent will temporarily act in northern Mali instead forces Multidisciplinary integrated United Nations Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA ). This was announced by the Minister of Defence of France Jean-Yves Le Drian, speaking on the radio station “Radio France Internationale”.


“In the north of Mali creates a very unstable situation due to the fact that MINUSMA could not deploy their forces as scheduled. It is for this reason that the French troops temporarily replaced by UN troops, especially in the region of Thessaly,” – said Jean-Yves Le Drian.


Last week, French authorities announced that enhances military contingent in northern Mali in connection with frequent attacks in the area. In particular, 3 October with military convoy was ambushed MINUSMA on the road linking the Malian town of Menaka and Ansongo. As a result of the death of nine peacekeepers from Nigeria.


According to military sources, in the area north of the River Niger deployed only 22% of the planned forces MINUSMA.


Defense Minister also stressed the urgent need to implement in practice the situation in Algeria signed an agreement between the Government of Mali and six armed groups from the northern part of the country.


“This document is definitely still requires certain additions, but in the future of its provisions should be immediately put into practice,” – said the Minister of Defence of France. Le Drian said that French troops will be in the north of Mali and ensure there is security within the time which is required for implementation of these agreements, as well as to strengthen the forces to the desired level MINUSMA.
