German Foreign Minister: Government is considering training Kurdish fighters in Iraq

BERLIN, Oct. 23.The German government is considering the issue of training fighters “Peshmerga” (Kurdish militias) directly into Iraq. This was announced on Thursday, Foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a visit to Baku.

According to the agency DPA, consider the option, in which the training will be carried out in the Kurdish city of Erbil (the administrative center of Iraqi Kurdistan), said Steinmeier. The Foreign Minister also added that for such a mission, in his opinion, should join other EU countries. According to Steinmeier, soon in Erbil will be sent a group of experts and the Ministry of Defense Foreign Minister of Germany, which is already in place will assess how realistic these plans.

“How exactly it will look like and when it can begin training mission (the Kurds), we will decide after the return of our peer group,” – said the Minister. According to him, “received signals from other EU member states,” its readiness to take part in such a mission. According to the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, it can be deployed up to 300 military personnel, including about 100 soldiers of the Bundeswehr.

In late September, along with the supply of weapons to the Kurds Germany to fight with a group of Islamic State (IG), the armed forces of Germany have begun to prepare fighters “Peshmerga” directly on the territory of Germany. Training is carried out in the Bavarian Infantry School Hammelburg.

Previously, Berlin decided to grant the Kurds for combating Islamic State weapons worth about 70 million euros, including 30 anti-tank missile systems, “Milan” with 500 missiles, 16000 Assault rifles. Some of the weapons had already arrived at the disposal “Peshmerga”.
