General Martin Dempsey did not rule out that in certain circumstances he would have to recommend to President Barack Obama to introduce ground forces in Iraq.
NEW YORK, October 16. Antiterrorist coalition led by Washington will not allow the capture of the capital of Iraq – Baghdad – gunmen group Islamic State (IG). This confidence was expressed on Wednesday the head of the Joint Chiefs (JCS) US Armed Forces Gen. Martin Dempsey in an interview with broadcaster CNN.
Responding to a reporter’s question about whether, in his opinion, to take control of insurgents Baghdad, Dempsey said: “I do not think that it can happen. I’m sure we can help the Iraqis avoid capture of Baghdad.”
According to him, the Iraqi forces need more training, but they were able to “establish a sufficiently serious security perimeter around Baghdad.” This line of defense, as noted by Dempsey, is “very dense and deep.” The general also expressed the view that the current coalition “is on the right track.” At the same time, he acknowledged that airstrikes alone can not defeat the Islamic State group.
The general said that the name “Inherent Resolve”, which received the operation of the USA and their allies against the Islamic State means “the need to act firmly and consistently to fulfill the mission received.”
United States and its allies in Iraq will create three bases for military training
United States and its allies in the antiterrorist coalition in Iraq to create three bases where foreign instructors will train Iraqi forces, said Gen. Martin Dempsey.
“We now have 12 teams of advisers in the country – said Dempsey. – A day before we got from other members of the coalition significant evidence of their willingness to also send a group of advisers. We are going to create three bases for training, which can increase the combat capability of the Iraqi security forces.” In some parts of the country will settle these databases and how they will be constructed, he did not elaborate.
In this case, Dempsey did not rule out that at some point, can arise from such conditions under which he would have to recommend to President Barack Obama to introduce American ground forces in Iraq.
“I can not foresee this possibility when we should return a significant military force in Iraq – said the general. – But the war is full of surprises. Islamic state is a threat to national security. If it comes, I will be recommending it”.
