Earlier, Finnish Minister of Defence Karl Haglund announced its intention to sign an agreement with NATO on military aid next week


HELSINKI, on 27 August. Finland plans next week during the NATO summit in Wales to sign an agreement with the organization for military assistance in crisis situations. As said in a statement Wednesday the Finnish government, this agreement is a memorandum of understanding, and does not impose obligations on Finland to place foreign military forces on its territory or allow them to transit through it.


“The memorandum is not an international treaty, it is inherently an installation document. It does not require either party to give or receive assistance or troops. Finland therefore in each case, will be to decide for itself whether it will make any action in which it is necessary to use agreement. Signing the memorandum, Finland assumes no obligation to accommodate foreign military forces on its territory or allow them to transit through, “- noted in the government.


The Cabinet also explained that the agreement on military aid is an international concept that can be applied in various emergency situations. While in Finland it is not new – the country has carried out international military exercises, and the signing of the instrument of this cooperation will simply more efficient to discuss its details in the future.


Earlier Wednesday, the Finnish Defence Minister Carl Haglund announced its intention to sign an agreement with NATO on military aid next week.


Document will provide the North Atlantic alliance right to conduct exercises in the Finnish territory, and, in addition, provides assistance in times of crisis. Agreement should be encourage to improve Finland’s willingness to take the soldiers from other countries, as well as increase the level of maintenance of military equipment. According to Haglund, the document is part of a partnership of Finland and the North Atlantic Alliance, which was formalized in the early 2000s.


NATO summit to be held in Wales from 4 to 5 September. As stated, its main themes – the situation in Afghanistan, the crisis in Ukraine and the role of the alliance in the “unpredictable world” of the future.
