Canadian military aircraft for the first time joined the NATO mission for the Protection of Baltic airspace


VILNIUS, 26 August. On the Lithuanian Air Force Base Zokniai landed four fighters Canadian Air Force F / A-18 “Hornet”. As reported by the military department of Lithuania, the Canadian military aircraft for the first time joined the NATO mission for the Protection of Baltic air space.


Pilots “Hornet” will have to serve a four-month duty. Together with the Canadians will carry it on the four F-16 fighter jets the Air Force contingent Portugal. For them, this is the second mission in Zokniai where the Portuguese arrive on 29 August.


Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia did not have the necessary aircraft to protect its airspace. Since 2004, to be replaced every four months, do their NATO partners. Patrolling all this time by four fighters, but in March of this year, the NATO leadership has decided to strengthen the mission of up to eight military vehicles, and in April – place additional Allied fighters in Estonia at the airbase in Amari.


In Zokniai Canadian and Portuguese military pilots will replace Poland and the UK. In Amari in place there are Danes arrive Luftwaffe fighters. Official ceremony of transfer of the mission is scheduled for September 1st.
