According to the representative of the alliance, the Western countries are trying to influence Russia with economic sanctions
WASHINGTON, August 30. NATO military intervention in the situation in the south-east of Ukraine may lead to a conflict with Russia, and there is no plan that countries of NATO will take any “direct military action” in an attempt to settle the Ukrainian crisis. This opinion was expressed on Friday to the Public Radio (NPR) United States Deputy Secretary General of NATO Alexander Vershbow.
“This was said on the eve of President Barack Obama, and I think that the leaders of other NATO countries do not speak of any direct military involvement in the situation in Ukraine” – he said, adding that otherwise, it may lead to conflict with Russia.
According to Vershbow, the Western countries are trying to influence Russia through economic sanctions. “At the moment we are trying to follow the economic sanctions, leading to international isolation. Thus we can reach an equitable political solution – the restoration of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”, – he stated.
In this case, Vershbow said that the Kiev authorities did not address the North Atlantic with a request to direct military intervention. “Ukraine is absolutely made it clear that it did not expect that someone will come and begin to fight for it. Ukrainian authorities only seek support for their armed forces,” – said the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, which from 2001 to 2005, he was US Ambassador to Russia.
