According to the Minister of Defence of the Kingdom, the decision “has nothing to do with the current conflict in Ukraine” and is not directed against Russia
COPENHAGEN, August 21. Denmark will take part in the creation of a missile defense system (NMD) of NATO in Europe.
The decision was made on Thursday at a meeting of the parliamentary commission for foreign policy.
Told reporters after the meeting of the Minister of Defence of the Kingdom Nicolai Wammen, the decision “has nothing to do with the current conflict in the Ukraine.” “Accession of Denmark to the missile defense system is not directed against Russia, – he said. – It is made in order to protect themselves from rogue states, terrorist organizations and those who have the ability to launch a missile strike on Europe and America.”
“Now, together with a number of other countries, we will hold a feasibility study for equipping one or more of our frigates radars so that they can be included in the missile defense system,” – said the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Martin Lidegor. “We support the missile defense shield, because it is the main priority of NATO,” – said the head of the Foreign Ministry.
Lidegor added that the deployment of the radar on frigates “relatively cheap.” Thus, according to the newspaper Jyllands-Posten, equip one ship will cost 400-500 million euros ($ 73-91 million). In turn, Wammen said that “of course, is a major investment, and they will be included in a future agreement on the defense.” Military spending and military construction in Denmark are carried out on the basis of the inter-party agreement concluded for a period of 4 years.
Satisfaction with the decision expressed NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. He stressed that “this is an important decision that will strengthen the power of the alliance.”
According to local media, against the decision of accession of Denmark to the NATO missile defense system at the commission meeting were left Socialist People’s Party and the “Red-Green” alliance.
