The number of internally displaced persons has increased to 155 800 persons
GENEVA, August 18th.The UN reported that due to the incessant shelling of Donetsk and Lugansk of two cities located in eastern Ukraine, during five days 22000 persons have escaped.
This is stated in the report of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which describes the situation as of August 15th.
“The continued shelling of Donetsk and Lugansk led to an increase in the number of displaced persons, – the report says OCHA. – More than 22 000 persons fled from Donetsk and Lugansk in the last five days compared to 6200 persons during the first week of August ”
“Humanitarian needs continue to grow. Not less than 200 000 persons living in Lugansk, without electricity, water and communications for more than ten days”, – the report says.
OCHA reports that the number of internally displaced persons, that is, people who have fled their homes but remain in the country, has grown in the Ukraine to 155000 persons. For comparison, as of the beginning of August the number was 117 000 persons.
Ukrainian refugees in Russia
Moreover, the number of Ukrainians who have crossed the border with Russia and turned to the authorities of the Russian Federation has increased over the two weeks to 20 000 persons, to 188 200 persons. At the same time, this figure does not reflect the total number of Ukrainians who migrated to Russia, as many of the refugees do not apply to the Federal Migration Service or other government agencies.
Thus, even on August 5 United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that because of the opposition of government forces and militias from April in eastern Ukraine to Russia ran 730 000 Ukrainians.
OCHA reported that just from mid-April until August 13 and “at least 2119 people, including at least 20 children were killed and 5043 people, including at least 30 children, were injured in the east of Ukraine.” In total, according to UN estimates, at least 60 people die per day in the region over the past four months.
