GENEVA, August 20th. The number of internally displaced persons in the Ukraine as a result of the conflict in the east of the country has increased over the past few days, tens of thousands of people and now stands at about 190000 persons.

These information  we received from  press secretary of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Ariane Rammer.

“Recent estimates by UNHCR indicate that in Ukraine there are 190 000 Internally displaced persons”, – said Rammer. She stressed that this figure may not fully reflect the real situation. “We recognize that the number of displaced persons may be greater in the absence of a central registration system,” – said Rammer.

As of August 15, according to statistics from the UNHCR, the number of internally displaced persons, that is, people who have fled their homes but remain in the country, were 155.800 people in Ukraine. For the three months as their number jumped to 19 times. Exactly three months ago, May 20, the Office reported on the 10 000 Internally displaced persons in Ukraine.

As for the number of Ukrainians who had fled to Russia, their number, shall inform the Office of the High Commissioner, reached 197.400, of whom 78 000 officially requested refugee status. This is almost 30000 More than two weeks ago, when the UNHCR issued a similar last statistics.

Nevertheless, the actual number of Ukrainian refugees in Russia much more. With reference to the Russian authorities, UNHCR reports that since April, Russia ran 773 000 persons. In addition, in Poland the number of Ukrainian refugees reached 14.600 persons in Belarus – 13.800 persons.

According to the UN, only from mid-April to August 13 in the fighting in the east of Ukraine between army forces and militias killed at least 2,119 people, and more than 5 000 were injured.
